NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2  (Jennings, Briscoe)
EXETER CITY 0

Half-time Northampton 1 City 0.
F.A.Cup replay, at the County Ground.
Attendance 9,500.

Northampton:- Jones; Smalley, Barron;
Lowery, Dennison, Coley; Roberts, Jennings, Briscoe, Heaselgrave, Fowler.
Exeter City: Singleton; Thompson, Johnstone; Bartholomew, Gibson, Walker; Hutchings, Dymond, Smart, Wright, Regan.

Defeat by two goals to nil at Northampton ended the Cup-tie. Exeter City were victims of their own finishing errors, and because of this they deserved to be beaten. Outplayed in the first half but territorially superior afterwards Exeter lost because of the failure of their forwards every time they
got within reach of the Northampton goal. The turning point came after 15 minutes of the second half when a shot by Hutchings hit the crossbar. The City were then a goal down, Briscoe having scored for Northampton before the interval. A tussle in the home penalty area following Hutchings's shot resulted in the City being awarded a spot kick. Thompson, usually so reliable, shot weakly and straight at Jones, who saved the attempt. Immediately afterwards Jennings raced through and forced the ball over the Exeter line from close range. The replay was thus won and lost in a matter of seconds.

Southern League, at The Eyrie.

BEDFORD TOWN 0
EXETER CITY RES. 3
(Sutherland, Mackay, Fallon)
Half-time Bedford 0 Exeter 2.
Attendance 4,000.

Bedford:- Greygoose; Henson, Pell; Reid, Boyle, Townsend; Bex, Scarlett, Williams, Murray, Crowe.

City Reserves:- Hoyle; Coles, Rowe;
Walker, Davey, Evans; Dymond, Mackay, Sutherland, Granville, W. Fallon.

Although Bedford were two goals down at half time they did not deserve this reverse. Yet in the second half Exeter monopolised the play but only scored once. Poor shooting by Sutherland and Fallon was responsible to a fair extent, but Greygoose and Boyle played well, though Bedford Town's defence as a whole was unsafe. Pell had a trying time with Dymond, who was Exeter's best forward, and Fallon was too fast for Henson. Exeter opened with some speedy pattern-weaving which failed first because Dymond could not centre the ball and afterwards because the ball was put wide by Sutherland with the goal at his mercy. But the City's first goal was obtained by Sutherland, who side-stepped the goalkeeper and tapped the ball into an empty net. Mackay shot the second goal after a fast forward move initiated by Granville, and Fallon got the third after the interval.

  • CITY CHIEFS WITHOUT A MATCH.

There was no match for the City "chiefs" today, and for this blunder the Football League primarily and the attitude of the Port Vale club secondly, are to blame.
Port Vale and Exeter should have met last Saturday but the fixture could not take place because of the City's F.A.Cup replay. Neither Exeter or the Vale had a League game scheduled for this week, but Port Vale arranged a friendly with Lincoln City. When Exeter lodged a protest they were told by the League that the friendly match at Lincoln would have to be played.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 8  (Dymond, Sutherland 3, Evans 3, Fallon) TORQUAY UNITED RESERVES 0

Half-time Exeter 5 Torquay 0.
Southern League, at St James's Park. Attendance 5,000.

City Reserves:- Hoyle; Coles, Rowe; Walker, Davey, Jeffrey; Dymond, Granville, Sutherland, Evans, W.Fallon.

Torquay Reserves:- Caseley; Keeton, Markham; McDonough, Whitfield, Cothliff; G.Jones, Jewell, Kelly, Beeson, Thomas.
Exeter City Reserves, who are unbeaten since October 4th, continued in grand style and outclassed a plucky but ineffective Torquay side at St James's Park, scoring eight times without response in a one sided encounter which would have been farcical but for the dogged Torquay defence and occasional flashes of brilliance by Thomas. The best second team Exeter have fielded for nearly twenty years delighted the biggest Southern League attendance at St James's Park this season.

  • ANOTHER BLANK SATURDAY FOR EXETER CITY.

    Due to the new rule which forbids Cup replays in midweek Exeter City were without a match for the second consecutive Saturday. Last week Port Vale could have played their League match with Exeter at St James's Park, but the Football League ruled that the friendly match which had been arranged between Port Vale and Lincoln City at Lincoln would have to be played. This afternoon the City should have met Walsall, but the latter were engaged in a replayed F.A.Cup tie with Norwich City. Accordingly the Southern League match between the City Reserves and Torquay United Reserves was brought forward from February 21st 1948.
