The match at Leyton, in which Exeter City triumphed by four goals to two, was not a thriller in the sense that the Bristol City matches were a week earlier. At the same time it was not a clash between two poor teams. Average Southern Section entertainment was provided throughout this contest in which Exeter's superiority was seldom challenged seriously. One reason for the City's easy victory was that their defence was more dependable than an Orient rearguard which without an effective covering plan was leaden-footed and hesitant in the tackle. Another contributory factor was that the Exeter forwards were more creative and better marksmen. In a sentence the winners had little to beat, and they did their job in the manner expected of a side which unbeaten in the League since September 25th 1947 has won seven and drawn five of its last twelve matches.

Exeter City Reserves, undefeated for sixteen games, had no easy task against the Newport works team, Lovells. The visitors played a polished game, particularly outstanding in their ranks being Hodder and Shaw, forwards, and Clarke, centre half. For the City Singleton was a faultless goalkeeper, Davey a sound defensive centre-half and Bartholomew a clever constructive wing half. Grant and Fallon were Exeter's more dangerous wing in an attack which got fewer chances than in most games this season. Included in the Exeter team was Peter Fallon, the younger brother of W.J., now out of the Royal Air Force and a full time professional. He is regarded as one of the most promising young players on Exeter City's books.
