EXETER CITY 0
TORQUAY UNITED 2  (Lewis, Kelly)

Half-time City 0 Torquay 1.
League 3rd Division South, at St James's Park.
Attendance 12,751.

City: Singleton; Thompson, Johnstone; Evans, Gibson, Walker; Dymond, Mackay, Sutherland, Wright, Regan. Referee:- Mr C.J.Wakeley, of Somerton
Torquay:- Joslin; Head, Stuttard; Towers, Whitfield, Pryde; Lewis, Shaw, Kelly, Conley, Mercer.

Victory in the Devon Derby went to the faster and better balanced team. Torquay won because their forwards played as a line. Their defenders covered each other well. The City's unbeaten home record was broken because the whole team played below their standard usually seen this season. Exeter were incohesive in attack and unimpressive behind. Exeter's biggest fault was that their forwards were too slow in the anticipation of the run of the play, and most of the City vanguard were content to get rid of the ball and then stand still. And tactics such as these were doomed to failure against a defence as well covered as Torquay United's. Exeter were in fact struggling from the time when Lewis scored the opening goal from Conley's centre, 20 minutes after the start. The City were knocked out completely after Kelly shot the second goal fifteen minutes after the half time interval. For Exeter it was a thoroughly bad day. Their run of wins and draws  came to an end at the thirteenth match. For Torquay everything went right and according to plan.

HEREFORD UNITED 0

Half-time City 0 Hereford 0.

Southern League, at St James's Park.

Attendance 2,706, receipts £152.10s.0d.

City Reserves:- Hoyle; Coles, Rowe; Bartholomew, Blood, Jeffrey; Boylin, Granville, Smart, Grant, W. Fallon.
Hereford:- Lovett; Layton, Feeney;
Woods, Tranter, Irvine; Craddock, Duggan, Thompson, Watson, Adams.

Exeter City Reserves did well to beat Hereford, which they did in a closely fought game. The winning goal was obtained by Grant early in the second half and enables the Reserves to keep in the forefront of the challengers for the Southern League championship. After the goal was scored the City defence had to bear the brunt of the struggle against a forward line which revealed some entertaining constructive ideas. Despite missing a penalty (his shot was saved by Lovett) Bartholomew was the outstanding half-back in the game. He gave splendid service to his forwards all the time and has not played a better game since coming to Exeter last summer.

  • Exeter City's 3rd Division fixture v Swindon was postponed through Swindon being engaged in the fourth round of the F.A.Cup.
