NEWPORT COUNTY 4(Williams, Lewis 2, Johnstone own goal)

Half-time City 3 Newport 2.
League 3rd Division South, at St James's Park.

St James's Park was an attacker's dream but a defender's nightmare this afternoon when the heavy conditions underfoot accounted in part for an orgy of goalscoring. In a game which disappointed and pleased in turn none could complain of the result. For if the City did more pressing Newport played clever football, and rallied strongly in the closing stages to peg back the City's thrice-gained lead.

The time table of goals is given:

  • 12min Mackay for Exeter 1-0
  • 15min Lewis for Newport 1-1
  • 27min Hutchings for Exeter 2-1
  • 30min Evans for Exeter 3-1
  • 41min Williams for Newport 3-2
  • 68min Johnstone (og) for Newport 3-3
  • 80min Regan for Exeter 4-3
  • 85min Lewis for Newport 4-4
