League 3rd Division South, at St James's Park.
Attendance 16,942, receipts £1,317. 5s.0d.
City: Singleton; Thompson, Johnstone; Bartholomew, Gibson, Walker; Hutchings, Mackay, Sutherland, Granville, Regan.

Notts:- Brown; Southwell, Howe; Gannon, Corkhill, Baxter; Freeman, Sewell, Marsh, Parkes, Lyman.
The belief that Tom Lawton, the English International centre forward, whose sensational transfer from Chelsea to Notts County stunned the football world earlier in the season, would lead the County attack at St James's Park today was responsible for the largest gate since the war, nearly seventeen thousand people, but the famous leader was reported at the last minute to be at home recovering from an attack of gastric 'flu, and the leadership of the Notts forwards was given to Marsh, a reserve. Nevertheless, Notts County even without Lawton, looked an extremely good side. They were generally the masters of a moderate City team in both halves of the game. The big crowd, shocked by the eve of the match announcement that the big personality was off parade, suffered in silence an inept Exeter City display and were denied any partial consolation of a victory. Disillusioned and disgruntled the vast concourse left with unhappy memories. The deciding goal was scored by Parks a few minutes before half time. In the second half Lawton's deputy was given the chance of scoring with a penalty but shot straight at Singleton, who saved easily.

LOVELL'S ATHLETIC 0
EXETER CITY RES. 1 (Granville)
Half-time Lovells 0 City 0. at Newport.
Lovells: Williams; Steggles, Edmunds;
Evans, Clarke, Bye; Hodder, Prangley, Holland, Shaw, Morgan.
City Reserves:- Wright; Coles, Blood;
P.Fallon, Davey, Jeffrey; Boylin, Grant, Sutherland, Vaughan, Granville.
Ray Wright kept goal for the City Reserves in this Southern League Cup-tie at Newport. He played there because Hoyle has a leg injury which has been affecting him for about two weeks. Twice this season Wright has stepped into the breach by becoming an emergency goalkeeper. He did so when the Reserves were at Torquay on Boxing Day on account of Hoyle having to retire with a wound over his eye, during the game, and the following day for the chiefs at the Bristol City ground when Singleton had been kicked on the leg by the onrushing home forwards. It is a measure of Wright's ability as a goalkeeper that on the three occasions he has filled this role he has not conceded a single goal! In the match at Newport today a goal by Granville three minutes from the end rewarded the City Reserves with victory over Lovells. The City's win was all the more meritorious because they were without Sutherland, injured, throughout the second half. The injury to the Exeter leader occurred 20 minutes after the start of the game. He resumed on the wing following a ten minutes absence but the damage worsened during the interval and he did not re-appear.
The qualifying competition for the Southern League Cup now having been completed, the results are given in photo 3.
