Goalless draws are often boring, but an exception was provided in a lively clash at St James's Park on Wednesday evening when Exeter and Port Vale battled with grand resolution in a match which contained a great many thrilling incidents. In the first half Jeffrey came to Exeter's rescue when he cleared the ball from under the crossbar with Singleton beaten, and four minutes from the end the Port Vale goal survived miraculously when a lovely shot by Bartholomew rattled their cross-bar.
