Match 43
24th April 1948
Port Vale (a)
Southern League.
Barry Town (h)
Saturday, April 24th 1948.
PORT VALE 1 (Smith)
EXETER CITY 1 (Regan)
An improved Exeter City deserved their point. Post Vale were the better side in the first half but Citys superiority in the 2nd half was unmistakeable.
The Forward line were cood in inter passing movement, which often had the Vale defence in a tangle. Clever approach work had threatened the downfall of Port Vale long before Regan meeting an Ebdon cross pass on the run drove hard into the top far corner of the net for a magnificent equaliser 15 minutes from the end of the game.
The goal which had given the home side the lead would have beaten any defence a fine through pass by Hallam to Smith who shot passed the advancing Hoyle. Peter Fallon who was making his debut alongside Steve Walker who had replaced the injured Davey can look back on this game with satisfaction. A tenacious worker, he was always prominent in the Halfback line that also saw Walker playing an excellent game.
Citys attack in which Dymond-Smart partnership made for greater effectiveness on the right flank has not played for several weeks. Mackay was in his happiest mood after the interval when he and Regan harassed the Vale defence to good purpose.
