EXETER CITY v
SOUTHEND UNITED
Attendance 11,229,
Receipts £817. 4s. Od.
The lessons to be learned from this goalless contest are that energy without guile and enthusiasm without marksmanship will not win many matches. The City did enough attacking and had sufficient chances to have made victory certain. Whilst the City encountered much stronger opposition in Southend than on Saturday against Northampton, the strongest challenge to both sides was the strong diagonal wind which caused the ball to come through at deceptive strength. Exeter's players continually lofted the ball with the result that the tall Southend defenders were nearly always masters of the situation.
EXETER CITY: Hoyle Johnstone Rowe Bartholomew Gibson Walker Hutchings Smart Johnston Mackay Regan
Referee:- Mr A.W.Smith, of Aldershot. Linesmen: Messrs L.R.H.Burfield and W.H.Davey.
SOUTHEND UNITED: Nash Beach Walton French Sheard Montgomery Tippett Gray Grant Dudley

The best players on the field were Gibson and Sheard, both of whom were pillars of strength. Another player to shine was Rowe, the City left back, whose good positional play and timely interceptions did the most to break up the Southend attacks.

THE UNITED WON THEIR CUP GAME
Colchester United were a goal down twenty minutes from the end of their Southern League Cup game with Exeter Reserves at Layer Road last evening, but a grand rally gave them a 3-1 win.
They got three goals in fifteen minutes, to the jubilation of the 9,000 crowd. Colchester now entertain Bedford or Tonbridge in the next round.
Most of the play had been in the Exeter half, but their forward play lacked finish, plus which the Exeter defence was as sound as a beil.
Exeter were always the more dangerous in their less frequent attacks and they scored through - Smith after twenty-five minutes. Arthur Turner equalised from a penalty. Within two minutes Curry got through and Cutting put United ahead. Near the end a defender deflected a shot from Hillman past Singleton. was outstanding in the home defence
City: Singleton; Warren, Clark; Evans, Davey, Powell; Fallon, Cutting, Smith, Jeffery, Grant.
Scorer:- Smith.
