Although the City scored 4 goals to Norwich City's 1 their general standard of performance suffered because it lacked consistency. The Grecians were slow to get into their stride and were outplayed in the opening 20 minutes by the sprightly Norwich forwards. The brightest patch was crammed into three exciting minutes midway through the first half when from a seemingly inferior side Exeter were transformed into a powerful combination. The Exeter forwards advanced in movements of the highest quality and the Norwich defence wilted, conceding two goals, scored by Smart and Regan.

Ryder beat Hoyle from close quarters just before the interval when he snapped up a partial clearance from Walker. Hoyle, who has played few better games, foiled the Norwich attackers several times in the second half. The duel then turned in the City's favour once more, and goals came from Smart and Mackay.

Cheltenham Missed Chances

The 3-0 score against Exeter hardly indicated the run of the play, because at times they attacked strongly.

Cobb, Cheltenham' right-wing. frequently gave his centres chances, but they were missed until just before the interval, when Higgs scored. In the second half play was in Cheltenham's favour, but scoring chances were missed until Higgs netted. The same player, with a long shot, scored his third goal of the match.
