Tuesday, August 31st 1948.
SOUTHEND UNITED 0
EXETER CITY 0
Attendance 14,000.
Both teams lacked drive and a goalless draw was a fitting result to a drab game, in which play was marred by several injuries towards the end. Football quality was almost entirely missing, little there was came from Exeter. and what
SOUTHEND:
Nash
Lindsay Walton
French Sheard Montgomery
Tippett Grant Dudley Osmond Edwards
CITY:
Hoyle
Johnstone Rowe
Bartholomew Gibson Walker
Dymond Smart Johnston Mackay Regan
The City's forwards showed some cleverly planned inter-changing at times, but they were rarely able to finish with a good shot. Southend's raids, although ragged, produced more than one dangerous moment, and Exeter's defence was caught on the wrong foot more than once. Walker, a fine half-back, once headed away when the City goal was empty, and Rowe also blocked a goal-bound shot with his legs. Hoyle saved a crashing drive from a free-kick taken by Montgomery and later made a sensational save from Dudley.
