(Bartholomew 2)

PORT VALE 1
(Martin)

Half-time City 1 Port Vale 0.
Attendance 10,672,

Three minutes from the end Exeter City looked as if they would have to wait another season at least before beating Port Vale for the first time at St James's Park. (In three previous visits Port Vale have drawn twice and won once). Everything pointed to a drawn game when the City forced a corner on the right. A goalmouth scramble was followed by a partial clearance, and the ball came to Bartholomew, who, without attempting to manoeuvre for position, volleyed hard and high into the corner of the net.

CHELMSFORD 2 CITY RESERVES 1.

Exeter's left-wing pair, Jeffery and Grant, frequently had the home defence in a tangle, while Davey had the complete mastery of Forman, the Chelmsford centre-forward. But although Johnston got a goal for the City eight minutes from the end Maker had already scored twice for Chelmsford.

City team:- Singleton; Warren, Clark; Cutting, Davey, Coles; Hutchings, Fallon, Johnston, Grant, Jeffery.
