Though he had slight concussion for three parts of the game, Hoyle made only one mistake against Walsall, and then the visitors scored through Devlin after a 40-yards return from a partly cleared corner had rebounded from the crossbar. Hoyle was hurt when bravely going down to the feet of Chapman. In a gallantly daring save the Exeter goalkeeper was accidentally kicked on the back of the head. Mackay was also reduced to a limping passenger as the result of his being brought down in the Walsall goalmouth soon after the start but no penalty was given.
