EXETER CITY 2
(Dymond 2)

HEREFORD UNITED 1 (Thompson)

Half-time City 2 Hereford 1.
F. A. Cup 2nd round,
attendance 8,000.

Though Exeter City beat Hereford United, their supporters were not impressed by this narrow and fortuitous victory. Far too many and too frequent mistakes were made by the Grecians, whose forwards were guilty of bad marksmanship, the half-backs lost their grip in the last 30 minutes, and neither full-back inspired.

Hoyle alone consistently maintained a first-class standard. Daring when the situation was desperate, he thrice dived at the feet of ad vancing forwards to smother the ball. The City scored twice in the first half, and would have doubled the tally but for bad finishing, which cannot altogether be excused by the churned-up playing pitch. Regan failed twice with only the goalkeeper to beat, and Evans and Dymond added to the long list of pre-interval failures. Between Exeter's two goals Thompson scored for Hereford, whose play in the second half entitled them to a replay.

Exeter were usually a little slower on the ball than Worcester and paid the penalty. Worcester whose victory was well-deserved, took the lead in ten minutes, when Stan Batty, their captain, former Newport County and Aston Villa left-back, joined in the attack, and his long centre enabled Airlie to head a grand goal.

Soon after the interval, the Exeter goalkeeper carried the ball over the line when challenged by Mogford, who also netted a third goal from close range a minute later. Exeter replied through Johnston, and Summers scored Worcester's fourth goal.

Exeter team:- Singleton; Johnstone, Powell; Harrower, Clark, Jeffery; Hutchings, Cumming, Johnston, Grant, O'Hagan.
