BOXING DAY,
MONDAY, DECEMBER 27th 1948.
At the Goldstone Ground, Brighton, the City impressed as a really workmanlike team, the whole side playing fast, intelligent football. It was only Brighton's reliable defenders who prevented Exeter from taking an early lead. Mackay, a clever schemer, and Harrower, almost as good, revealed a true understanding of clever ball control and first-time passing. Smart was a persistent menace to Baldwin and his backs. With a little bit of luck at close quarters Exeter might have shared the points, but their finishing was disappointing at times. Brighton won by two goals to nil, Lewis and Lancelotte scoring two minutes of the resumption of play in the second half, and within one minute of each other.

Exeter Forward Hurt
Exeter City Reserves defeated Torquay United Reserves by five clear goals before a 4,400 crowd at St. James' Park, yesterday.
Three of the goals were scored by Rew, the Bristol and District League amateur, who was a clever and enterprising centre-forward. Evans and Hutchings also netted.
Both sides played attractive foot- ball, and the margin rather flattered Exeter, Jeffry, the City in- side forward, was injured in a col- lision and several stitches were inserted in a head wound.
