Saturday, August 27th 1949.
WATFORD (Woodroffe) 1
EXETER CITY (Mackay, Regan) 2

Half-time Watford 1 City 2.
Attendance 11,000.
Referee:- Mr B.M.Griffiths, of Newport.

Watford: Morton; Harper, Oliver; Paton, Hunt, Eggleston; Worthington, Woodroffe, Thomas, Brown, Cumner. City: Hoyle; Johnstone, Rowe; Powell, Davey, Greenwood; Hutchings, Mackay, Rew, McClelland, Regan.

Local men who played leading roles in Exeter City's 2-1 triumph at Watford were Davey, of Crediton, and Rowe, of Exeter. Davey, whose display earned him high praise from Arthur Grimsdell, the former English international and 'Spurs left-half, now a director of Watford, was faultless in the air and deadly in the tackle. From being the inferior side in the first 15 minutes Exeter improved greatly, gained command, and did not surrender the initiative until the final stage when Watford threw everything into a succession of frenzied attacks which were countered by a cool and competent defence. Hoyle was at fault when Woodroffe with a slow ground shot gave the home side an early lead. Morton was equally to blame when Mackay beat him with a swerving high shot from the narrowest of angles with ten minutes remaining for the interval. The City's winning goal, however, was the outcome of a classic passing movement by which Mackay, McClelland and Rew baffled the defence, Rew eventually getting his foot to the ball which rebounded to Regan, who ran it into an empty net.

Roy Off Target

Roy, who joined Exeter from Dunfermline with a reputation as a marksman, was the puzzle of a goal-less draw at St. James's Park. With Digby, former Dawlish amateur, on the wing. Roy made an aggressive right flank which often beat the defence, but when it came to shoot- ing he was surprisingly ineffective ; So were Durrant and Harrower. Exeter's inside forwards threw away many scoring chances. The Exeter backs had trouble in coping with Lewis, a forceful centre forward, and Withington, outside right, but Singleton, in the Exeter goal, was cool when his backs were in a tangle.

Teams:- City Reserves, Singleton; Warren, Clark; Fallon, Gibson, Squires; Digby, Roy, Durrant, Harrower, Smith.
Dartford, Corbett; Rattray, Driscoll; Davis, Wright, Gee; Whittington, Conway, Lewis, Farrington, Dix.
