In a match of changing fortunes at Meadow Lane a crowd of thirty two thousand saw Exeter City almost bring off the shock of the season. Last season in the corresponding game the City were beaten 9 - 0 but this time the County only saved a point in a desperate rally in the last nine minutes. The County quickly established a two-goal lead, Johnston scoring in 20 minutes and Lawton with a header two minutes later. Regan reduced Exeter's arrears after 35 minutes and McClelland shot the equaliser four minutes after the resumption. Notts were ragged in defence and it was no surprise when Regan put Exeter in front in the 60th minute. Seven minutes from the end Johnston from Lawton's pass obtained the Notts team's equalising goal.
