EXETER CITY 1 (Regan)

NORTHAMPTON TOWN 3 (McCulloch 2, Garrett)

Half-time City 0 Northampton 1. Attendance 8,000.

City: Singleton; Johnstone, Rowe; Doyle, Davey, Greenwood; Hutchings, Harrower, Smith, McClelland, Regan.
Referee:- Mr E.W.Baker, of Epsom.
Northampton:- Ansell; Smalley, Southren; Candlin, McCoy, Coley; D.Smith, Garrett, McCulloch, Murphy, Fowler.

While it is easy to catalogue Exeter City's faults, finding a remedy remains a difficult problem. Against Northampton at St James's Park the City were unreliable in defence and unbalanced in attack. Though the team tried hard they were not good enough. Neither are replacements of the right calibre to be found in the ranks of the second eleven. Poor covering in today's game presented the Cobblers with a couple of easy chances, which were missed, before McCulloch scored the opening goal. Regan and Smith then missed for Exeter through weak shooting. Singleton was to blame for Northampton's second goal. He dived low to a shot from Fowler and missed the ball, which rebounded to McCulloch, who scored easily. When Garrett netted the third goal Exeter were already a beaten side, and Regan's successful shot came too late to make any difference.

PLUNKETT NETTED WINNING GOAL

A CLOSE thing for Chelmsford City-but they just did it. By a 3-2 win over Exeter City Reserves, Chelmsford go into the next round of the Southern League Cup. The game was played at New Writtle Street before a 1,940 attendance. On the day's play it was difficult to understand how Chelmsford City thrashed Exeter 8-1 at Exeter. Yet they had command of the second-half. Tenacious tackling and sound heading of the Exeter men kept them out until, with the score at 2-2, SID. PLUNKETT netted the winner from Gower's well- judged opening. Exeter a stronger, taller and heavier side, did not look like a team that the City had walloped 8-1 at St. James Park. Their ball con- trol and their ability to open strong wing-to-wing attacks were impressive at first. Exeter were on top until a smart City move on the left saw Burley switch the ball to Gallacher, who lobbed the ball over. Full-back CLARKE headed into his own goal to give Chelmsford an early lead. Goalkeeper Hoyle, who has had several 1st team appearances, had no chance with this one. When Burley was brought down on the edge of the penalty spot, Soo's powerful free-kick went the wrong side. Seldom was a goal more richly deserved than when the tall, bustling Exeter team got the equaliser. It came through winger MITCHELL, who working cleverly into position, forced the ball into the corner of the net. Crozier came out to smother a shot from DURRANT, but he was beaten by the same player a minute later after Mitchell had appeared certain to score, the ball rebounding from the cross-bar. Durrant slashed it in. Exeter were value for their 2-1 half-time lead.

Half-time:- Chelmsford 1 City Reserves 2.

After McCormack was "grounded," Hurst brought the best out of Hoyle. A close call for the hefty lads from Exeter. Soo came up to take a corner-kick. He "flighted " the ball splendidly. McCORMACK was up to get the equaliser eight minutes from the change-over. Just when extra time looked like being the winner-five minutes to go-the City broke through smartly on the right. Soo had crossed the ball to Gowers and the young winger quickly returned over to the left, where PLUNKETT, unmarked was there to boot the best goal of the match. It was one of those "fraction-of- a-second" affairs. Goalkeeper Hoyle said afterwards he didn't see the ball until it was in the back of the net.
