Match 39

Bristol Rovers (h)
GOOD FRIDAY,
APRIL 7TH 1950.
Exeter City 2
Bristol Rovers 0
CITY BELOW PAR BUT DEFENCE HELD ROVERS IN CHECK.
Scorers Exeter City Mackay, Smart. Attendance 12,121.
Though Exeter City won by two clear goals, the display was not first class. The City were the better of two moderate teams whose main strength was in defence. Neither side were over endowed with attacking craft. The ball was in the air too much and few of the forwards appreciated the value of moving into an open space or making the low first time pass.
City played below their recent standard, a goalless first half saw City miss three good chances, Smart headed wide after Rovers Keeper omly partially saved a McClelland shot, then McClelland himself had a shot saved by Weare, driving from just inside the penalty area and Smith headed over the bar with only the Goalkeeper to beat.
Mackay gave the City the lead soon after the restart, gaining possession from a quickly taken throw in by Smith, he shot instantly from an oblique angle and the ball swerved on to the inside of an upright before rebounding into the net.
The 2nd goal was scored by Smart who shot past Weare following one of several corners forced by Exeter in the closing stages.
Half-time, no score.
