Match 01
19th August 1950
Millwall (h)
Southern League
Torquay United Res (a)
SATURDAY, AUGUST 19TH 1950.
Exeter City v Millwall
Three lessons to be learned from Exeter City's failure to win their opening match, at St James's Park, are that many members of the team must show greater determination, the ball must be moved faster, and with more accuracy, and the positional play needs to be improved. Pitted against tall and strong defenders, the lightly built Grecian forwards should have realised that nippiness and swiftness to move into the open spaces offered the best prospect of success.
City: Singleton; Johnstone, Clark; Fallon, Doyle, Davey; Mackay, Smart, Smith, Lynn, McClelland.
Millwall:- Finlayson; Fisher, Quinn; Short, Bowler, Reeves; Hodgetts, Constantine, Neary, Monkhouse, Morgan.
Referee:- Mr S.V.Davis, of Oxford. Linesmen:- Messrs R.L.Buscombe and W.H.Davey.
Attendance 10,488
The only goal, four minutes from the end, was scored by Neary, and it was a snatch-and-grab affair which came from a breakaway, after a lengthy spell of pressure by Exeter. Lynn, the only newcomer to be selected, was the best player in the Exeter team. Bowler, Constantine, and Short were the most prominent for the winners.

TORQUAY UNITED RESERVES 3
CITY RESERVES 1.
It was a bad day for Exeter, for the Reserves lost at Torquay, where Greenaway scored from a penalty. Carter's positional play was at fault when Torquay's three goals were obtained. The new forwards, Dunlop and Smyth, were less prominent in this match than they were in the trials.
Torquay:- Webber; Targett, K.Lewis; Taggart, McGuinness, Pembury; Tiddy, Davies, Brown, Northcott, Thomas.
Exeter City:- K.Salter; Warren, Rowe; Powell, Carter, Greenwood; Harrower, Dunlop, Greenaway, Smyth, Hutchings.
- This match was played in the evening, kick-off 6.30 p.m.
- Eddy Brown, the Torquay centre-forward, is on a month's trial from Brentford. He is 21 years of age.
