DOUBLE BLOW AS VICTORY LOOMED.
CITY WERE UNDESERVED LOSERS AT BRISTOL.
Wednesday, August 23rd 1950.
BRISTOL CITY 3 EXETER CITY 1.
Exeter City's defeat at Ashton Gate on Wednesday evening was an in justice to the beaten side. They were a goal in front until 22 minutes from the end, and looked like gaining both points when a double misfortune brought disaster. Archie Smith was heavily charged, but the foul, in midfield, was not punished by the referee. The ball was kicked to touch, and from the throw-in it was middled to Rogers. A quick transfer to Williams gave him the chance to shoot. Whatever chance Singleton may have had of stopping his shot vanished when a deflection by Johnstone caused the ball to ricochet far out of the goalkeeper's reach.
Bristol:- Morgan; Guy, Bailey; Peacock, Roberts, Beasley;Thomas, Eisentrager, Rogers, Lowrie, Williams.
Exeter:- Singleton; Johnstone, Rowe; Fallon, Doyle, Davey; Mackay, Dunlop, Smith, Lynn, McClelland.
Referee:- Mr E.D.L.Greig, of London.
Attendance 21,700.
That goal by Williams cancelled the lead which Smith had given the City nine minutes after the start by heading through a free - kick taken by Mackay. Bristol went in front for the first time ten minutes from the end through Lowrie, the Welsh international. Lowrie showed a touch of class by threading his way through the defence to beat Singleton with a perfectly placed low shot from a narrow angle. Even at this late stage it was anybody's game. A swift breakaway by Exeter had the Bristol rearguard floundering, but Smith finished the move by shooting straight at the goalkeeper, who stopped the ball with his legs. Bristol's third goal, by Lowrie, was scored about two minutes the finish.
