FRIENDLY MATCH AT EXMOUTH.
EXMOUTH TOWN v EXETER CITY RESERVES.

A large crowd at the Maer, Exmouth, saw a game that was both fast and entertaining. The professionals of Exeter City were more accurate as well as being quicker to the ball, and in the closing stages, when the amateurs were tiring, goals were conceded easily to a smoothly moving attack, so that the final score did them scant justice.

EXMOUTH TOWN 0 CITY RESERVES 6.

Half-time Exmouth 0 City 1.

Exmouth: G.Lear; P.Drew, W.Atkins; P.Godfrey, C.Mellish, L.Goss; G.Marshman, I.Taylor, Callandar, A.Wilson, W.Tidball.

Exeter City: K.Salter; Warren, Powell; Wilkinson, Carter, Greenwood; A.Short, Smart, Greenaway, Smyth, Regan.

Exeter were represented by a strong side, which included a number of the City's new signings, and other players with plenty of first team experience. Regan, playing full out in the first half, gave a true demonstration that he has recovered from his recent practice game injury. Smart also showed up well, but the man who caught the eye in the City line-up was Smyth. His scheming was a constant menace to the Exmouth defence. Exmouth were led untiringly by Callandar, and his splendid combined play with Marshman and Wilson led to the Town's most dangerous moves. Graham Lear, in goal, was even better than last year, his fielding of the high-rising drive being excellent, whilst the two new full-backs, Drew from Heavitree and Atkins from Friernhay, were a pair of strong and resolute defenders.

  • Exeter's scorers were Regan (2), Smart (3), Greenaway.
