CROWD THRILLED BY WONDER GOAL.
HOME VICTORY ON A RAIN SWEPT PITCH.
Wednesday, August 30th 1950.
EXETER CITY 1 BRISTOL CITY 0.
No finer goal has been seen at St James's Park since the war than the one which gave Exeter City victory over Bristol on Wednesday. Twenty minutes of the game had gone. Beasley tried a first-time shot. The ball hit Fallon and was quickly switched by the Exeter right - half to Harrower. A through pass down the middle was collected by Smith, but as he was closely shadowed by Roberts, the centre-forward appeared to have no chance. He had little room in which to operate, and Roberts is never the easiest rival to beat. Manoeuvring smartly, Smith wheeled away from the Bristol pivot. Then he swung round and suddenly shot with his left foot. It was a winner all the way. His fast drive from 20 yards' range was in the roof of the net before Morgan knew anything about it.
The crowd went into raptures over this wonder goal. Mr George Roughton said afterwards that it was the best one he had even seen in a match between Third Division teams.
Exeter City: Singleton; Johnstone, Rowe; Fallon, Goddard, Davey; Harrower, Dunlop, Smith, Lynn, McClelland.
Bristol City:- Morgan; Guy, Bailey; Peacock, Roberts, Beasley; Thomas, Eisentrager, Rogers, Lowrie, Williams.
Attendance 9,546, receipts £671. 7s. 9d.
On a rain-swept and greasy playing pitch no praise is too high for the rival defences. They could have been excused for making mistakes on an evening when the ball was skidding deceptively in all directions, but it was very seldom that they faltered. Stan Rowe in fact was the best player on the field. Fallon and Davey also performed valiantly following a first-half injury to Goddard, which threw an extra burden on the Exeter defence.
