Match 05
2nd September 1950
Walsall (h)
Southern League
Barry Town (a)
4th September 1950
Kettering Town (a)
CITY SCRAMBLED WHERE THEY SHOULD HAVE CANTERED.
BOTH ATTACKS POOR:
SINGLETON HAD NOTHING TO DO.
Saturday, September 2nd 1950.
Though Exeter City gained their third successive League win, the only goal of a disappointing game was delayed until the 80th minute. Lynn was the scorer. Quick to run into an open space, he was in an ideal position to accept Smith's thoughtful cross-field pass before netting from close range with the Walsall goalkeeper advancing in an attempt to narrow the angle.
EXETER CITY 1 (Lynn)
WALSALL 0
Half time, no score.
Attendance 10711
Exeter City: Singleton; Johnstone, Rowe; Fallon, Doyle, Davey; Harrower, Dunlop, Smith, Lynn, McClelland.
Walsall:- Lewis; Jones, Walters; Dearson, Russon, Green; Bowen, Corbett, Chapman, Devlin, Allison.
The goal, Lynn's first in the Southern Section, was the outcome of a good constructive movement, one of very few seen during a contest in which most of the honours went to the rival defences. Both attacks were poor. Exeter's vanguard was ill-balanced, with the right flank ineffective. So poor were the Walsall forwards that Singleton did not have a shot to stop until after the interval. Victory ought to have been the City's by a big margin. Instead, they scrambled through to a belated win and gave their supporters a lot of unnecessary anxiety.
Southern League
BARRY TOWN 3 CITY RESERVES 3.
After Barry had registered two early goals against the City Reserves at Jenner Park their supporters must have thought it all over bar the shouting. But Smyth, once before the interval and twice afterwards, scored three times for Exeter.
Team:- Salter; Warren, Powell; Hutchings, Carter, Greenwood; Short, Smart, Greenaway, Smyth, Regan.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH 1950.
KETTERING TOWN v
EXETER CITY RESERVES.
Members of the Southern League in the days when Exeter City was an amateur club little known outside East Devon, Kettering has rejoined that competition this season for the first time since the war. They were, however, fairly and squarely beaten on their own ground by the City Reserves on Monday evening by 2 goals to 1.
Kettering: Rowley; Tart, Johnson; Jamieson, Scott, Hibbard; Ainscough, Bazeley, Puplett, Kernick, Walker.
Exeter City: Salter; Warren, Powell; Hutchings, Carter, Greenwood; Short, Dunlop, Greenaway, Smyth, Regan.
Scorers:
Puplett (Kettering);
Dunlop and Greenaway for Exeter.
