THE TEN GALLANT MEN OF EXETER.
GRECIANS (ODDS AGAINST THEM) FOUGHT THROUGH TO VICTORY.
Wednesday, September 13th 1950.
The gallant ten men of Exeter City are deserving of much praise. The odds were all against them at St James's Park on Wednesday evening, but determination and stamina carried the depleted team to a victory over Swindon Town by one goal to nothing.

The "Red Devils" of Exeter were here, there, and everywhere. During as hard and thrilling a struggle as has been seen since the war they fought like demons, defied strong Swindon pressure, and had the crowd cheering as they have not cheered for many years. When the game was over the onlookers clapped and cheered for several minutes. It was the tribute of satisfied supporters to men who were magnificent in victory. No contest could have opened more dramatically. In a tense spell of five minutes Exeter had experienced success and tragedy. Joy came to the Grecians in the second minute. Smith, Harrower, and Smart led a rapid attack. Harrower's eventual cross was missed by the centre-forward but McClelland was there to score with a right footed low shot which was too fast for Burton to see, let alone stop. Sorrow soon followed. Cyril Johnstone and Bain were locked in a hard tackle. The City's acting skipper fell. Ambulance men were called for and Johnstone was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where it was diagnosed that he was suffering from a broken shin bone.
