CITY ARE FOURTH IN THE LEAGUE TABLE.
YET THE ATTENDANCE WAS THE LOWEST IN THE DIVISION.
Saturday, September 16th 1950.
EXETER CITY 2 IPSWICH TOWN O.
Contrasts at St James's Park today were Exeter City's brilliant first half and the dull second phase. The City toyed with the Ipswich team before the interval, scored two goals without reply, and deserved a bigger margin against a side with weaknesses fore and aft. The City's first nine games of the season have resulted in 6 victories and 3 losses. They have scored 11 goals against 7 and are fourth in the League 3rd Division South. Yet today's match was attended by only eleven thousand people, the lowest crowd in the Southern Section.
Exeter City: Singleton; Warren, Rowe; Fallon, Doyle, Davey; Harrower, Smart, Smith, Lynn, McClelland.
Referee:- Mr R.J.Burgess, of Reading.
Ipswich:- Burns; Feeney, Tyler; Baird, Rees, T. Parker; J.Brown, S.Parker, Driver, McCrory, O'Brien.
A shot from Harrower flashed just over the angle of the crossbar and upright. City were vastly superior, and incessant pressure was rewarded by goal in the 22nd minute.
CITY TAKE LEAD
The success was the outcome of a grand triangular movement which McClelland started by drawing Baird out of position before passing to Smith The centre-forward ran on to the ball and crossed it perfectly for SMART to head past the powerless Burns from close range. Far from being rattled by this reverse, Swindon replied with spirited attacks, and a long centre from Jones
looked dangerous The ball went to Driver, whose header intended for S. Parker, was intercepted in the nick of time by Doyle. McCrory was a useful Ipswich forward, but the visiting attack, though quick to follow up, was unable to penetrate a strong City defence. After a spell of inactivity, the City forwards revived, and Burns had to dash from his goal to kick away as Smith was coming in at top speed. Then came an Ipswich thrust and the nearest the Town had been to a goal so far.
CITY'S SECOND
The ball was whipped In quickly from the left and Driver, meeting it first time, was only a tinetion wide with a high shot from the edge of the penalty area. Good constructive play by the Irishnan, Baird, who was contemporary with George Roughton at Huddersfield, was of no avail. The Ipswich attack continued to be held in a vice-like grip. Towards the interval the City toyed with the opposition, and headed, his first Football League goal. He met a perfect corner-kick from McClelland high into the net. Dazzling footwork by Harrower delighted the crowd and the outside right ways almost among the goals with a close-range cross-shot, which hit the side-netting City's display was magnificent at

allowed. Taking advantage of momentary slackness, Ipawich played their best football so far and a really clever combined movement ended in S. Parker's cross going a foot wide. Another Ipswich raid was stemmed by Doyle, who dispossessed Driver and forced the hall into touch. A third visiting attack resulted in O'Brien slipping the ball into the net. but seconds after the lineeman had flagged for offside.
ACCURATE PASSING
Lynn excelled in approach play and his cross-Beld passes were models of security Only great work by Burna kept the City from increacing their lead One double save from Smith and Harrower was masterly. When the City returned to the attack a shot from McClelland was blocked by Rees Another from Harrower appeared to have been punched behind by Feeney, but the referee awarded a corner. The City fell away after thla, and i were making the mistage of waiting on the bounce, Slackness almost cost Exeter a goal and Singleton was beaten when Lynn, standing on the ine, headed away a header from Driver
Result
EXETER CITY 2-0 IPSWICH
COMMENTS
After being much the superior side for just over an hour Exeter City fell away and were forced to defend desperately late in the game, In the hrst half the City played much briliant football which made it all the more difficult to under stand their ragged performance subsequently. Warren, as a deputy for John. atone, did not let the aide down while Doyle and Davey were good half backs. Harrower and Lynn were best in an atack which suffered because of inconsistency. Ipswich were weak in defence before the interval, but the whole ride improved greatly in the second half.

Dartford v City Reserves
EXETER CITY RESERVES TIE AT DARTFORD
EXETER CITY RESERVES were at full strength for their match at Dartford, to-day, but Dartford brought in Evenden, a second team man, at inside-left. Dartford were first to attack but Withington's shot was safely held by Salter. Then Greenaway went through for City, but his centre was headed away by Wenham. Dare was brought down 30 yards out by Stratton and Goddard's free-kick fully extended Corbett. Exeter for wards attacked frequently and one clever movement between Dare and Dunlop spreadeagled the Dartford defence. Corbett did well to get Dare's eventual shot away for a corner. Dare was near the mark again with a header, Exeter were well on top now but they had a lucky escape when Salter only just edged Stratton's fierce free-kick over the bar. Dartford then had more of the play. and Evenden twice tested Salter with useful shots and Kelly had a hard drive deflected by Clark for a corner. Corbett saved Dartford when Greenaway was well off the mark with a header. Exeter forced the pace soon after, and DARE gave them the lead in the 38th minute when he burst through the middle and placed the ball out of Corbett's reach. A minute later he was nearly through again but Corbett saved well.
Half time
DARTFORD 0-1 CITY RESERVES
STRONG ATTACK
Dartford attacked strongly when the second half opened, but lacked finishing power. Goddard was out standing in the Exeter defence and broke up a series of promising move ments. His first real mistake let in Evenden, but the Dartford man wasted his chance. Exeter were lucky when Wenham just cleared the bar with a fierce drive, and again when Powell headed out from under the bar with Slater beaten. BUTLER equalised for Dartford.
Result:
DARTFORD 1-1 EXETER CITY RES
Wednesday, September 20th 1950.
LAST SECONDS SAVE KEPT ONE POINT.
FINE ANTICIPATION BY KEN SALTER.
A fine piece of anticipation by Ken Salter in the last seconds saved Exeter City Reserves a point in their Southern League match on the Northfleet ground on Wednesday evening. There was no scoring. Gravesend, who included four reserve forwards and a reserve centre half, attacked through Peters, and from his centre Clark headed in what looked a certain winner from four yards' range. But Salter, alert to the danger, brought off a smart save. The final whistle blew just afterwards.
Gravesend:- James; Baldwin, Chambers; Deevey, Skinner, Fullbrook; Gore, Wilson, Clark, Viles, Peters.
Exeter City: Salter; Powell, Clark; Hutchings, Goddard, Wilkinson; Mackay, Dunlop, Dare, Smyth, Greenaway.
In a game full of missed chances Gravesend were the worst offenders, although Greenaway after hitting an upright was badly at fault just after half-time. James rushed out to stop Dare, of whom little was seen, and the ball went to Greenaway, who shot over an empty net.
CLARK IN FORM.
When Mackay suffered a leg injury in the second half he changed over with Greenaway, but there was still no improvement in the balance and striking power of the City forwards. Smyth, who opened brilliantly, faded right out of the picture, and as Dare got little support in the middle Gravesend gradually got on top. Most of their attacks were broken up before danger threatened though, Jim Clark playing a grand game for the City at left back. The Gravesend Clark gave Goddard plenty to think about, however, and twice extended Salter with powerful ground shots. Chiefly it was nevertheless a game of missed chances, Wilson, Viles, and Gore all blundering when they had Exeter's goal at their mercy.
