CITY'S FOURTH AWAY WIN OUT OF SIX.

REGAN MAKES A SUCCESSFUL COME-BACK.

Saturday, October 7th 1950.

Four away wins out of a possible six this season is the proud record of the Grecians, and times are looking up at Exeter. The City's latest victory, at Colchester this afternoon, was by only one goal, but the narrowness of the margin does not tell the whole story. The City, superior in approach work before the interval, had the home defence bewildered many times. Even in the second half, when Colchester held territorial advantage, more scoring chances came Exeter's way.

COLCHESTER UNITED 0
EXETER CITY 1 (Smith)
Half-time Colchester O City 1.
Attendance 12,000.

Colchester:- Wright; Harrison, Allen; Bearryman, Stewart, Elder;Jones, Curry, Turner, McKim, Church.

Exeter City: Singleton; Clark, Rowe; Fallon, Goddard, Davey; Regan, Smart, Smith, Lynn, McClelland.

Bad luck and erratic finishing were factors which prevented the City
from winning easily. In the first half a shot from Smith hit the inside of a post and the ball came out. McClelland sent in a vicious shot which whizzed past the far post, missing it by inches only. In the second half Smith and McClelland both drove wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. Another easy scoring opportunity of the sort he usually thrives on was missed by Smart, who was beaten by the bounce of the ball on the uneven and bumpy playing surface.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 5
(Dare 4, Mackay)
HEADINGTON UNITED
(Rowlands)

Half-time 2-0.
Attendance 890
Reciepts  £51. 2s. 6d.

City Reserves:- Salter; Warren, Powell; Harrower, Doyle, Wilkinson; Short, Mackay, Dare, Dunlop, Greenaway.
Headington:- Woodward; Ramshaw, Tapping; Bidois, Toulouse, Stanton;
Buchanan, Kay, Rowlands, Barney, Nugent.

Headington were not so overplayed as the score suggests. Indeed some of their approach work was of the highest class, and they had an accomplished inside left in Barney, a former Reading and Bristol City player, who is on Grimsby Town's transfer list at £7,000. While Dare was the opportunist of the City attack Mackay was the schemer. His distribution of the ball was uniformly good. Doyle was a strong pivot, and Harrower used the ball skilfully in the right half-back position.

DARE'S FOUR GOALS.

  • No. 1. was a shrewd lob from an acute angle which sent the ball behind the goalkeeper into the top corner of the net.
  • No. 2. resulted from an amazing shot. After dribbling to where he was almost square to the goalmouth Dare pulled the ball onto his left foot and beat Woodward with a low drive just inside the near upright.
  • No. 3. followed a corner kick and
  • No. 4. was a header, also from a corner kick.
