EXETER CITY'S FOURTH AWAY WIN.

BROUGHT ABOUT BY SHREWD POSITIONAL SWITCH.

Saturday, October 21st 1950.

Exeter City's victory at Selhurst Park, their fourth on foreign soil this season, was the outcome of a shrewd positional switch of the wingers in the second half. After a goalless first half the City lined up with Regan on the left wing and McClelland on the right. Strong Palace pressure ended suddenly and Exeter broke away in a series of quick and accurate passes. A perfect ball went from Mackay to the unmarked Regan, who cut in to the penalty area and was left with only Graham to beat. It was the sort of chance which Regan used to thrive upon. The manner in which he accepted it was proof that he has not forgotten how.

Exeter City Reserves v Merthyr Tydfil

JUSTICE DONE IN EIGHT-GOALS THRILLER. DARE'S BIG SHARE IN CITY RESERVES' DRAW.

Even the referee got a cheer at the end of this eight goal thriller at St James's Park on Wednesday. Mr T.A. Wise, from Westbury, though slightly theatrical, was always up with the play and his decisions were good. He deserved the applause. So did the teams which gave the crowd so entertaining a display and also helped to relieve the prevailing goal famine at St James's Park. There was only one fitting result to a contest such as this, and justice was done by a division of the points in a game of several fluctuations of fortune.

Half-time City 3 Merthyr 2.

Merthyr, on top in the opening minutes, took the lead when Lowe headed in following a corner kick. The visiting side, playing a polished brand of football, had the look of League Champions in those early stages. Yet within a quarter of an hour the City had staged a dramatic come-back, in which they netted three times. Dare, who scored the first two goals, narrowly missed doing the hat-trick, but his cunning lob into the goalmouth after Davies had been lured out enabled Hutchings to shoot into the empty net. Exeter now looked bound for victory, but there was always danger from the high-speed Merthyr attack, and just before the interval Reynolds reduced their arrears. Merthyr's right flank was always a menace, and it was from crosses by Ridley that first Powell, then Lowe, headed two quick goals. The last goal of the match was a 30 yards' drive from Harrower and the ball flashed into the top of the net well out of the reach of Davies.
