SIXTH AWAY WIN OF THE SEASON.

RECORD UNSURPASSED BY ANY TEAM IN THE LEAGUE.

Saturday, November 4th 1950.

NEWPORT COUNTY 0 EXETER CITY 3 (McClelland 2, Smith).

The stage is set for a thrilling struggle when the rival Cities of Exeter and Norwich clash at St James's Park next Saturday. For both teams won today to remain the closest challengers to Notts Forest and Millwall in the promotion stakes. Exeter's 3-0 triumph at Newport brought further distinction to the club. The City have now won six away matches this season, a record unsurpassed by any team in the three Divisions of the League, and with only half a dozen goals conceded in the process it is hardly any wonder that critics are proclaiming Exeter City as the "away team-of-the-year."

Half-time, no score.

Newport:- Fearnley; Staples, Hayward; Stroud, Wilcox, Newall; Birch, Beattie, Parker, Shergold, Moore.
Exeter City:- Singleton; Clark, Rowe; Fallon, Goddard, Davey; Regan, Smith, Dare, Lynn, McClelland.

The City's victory at Somerton Park was as clear cut as the score indicated. The Grecians were seldom in serious danger against the Welshmen, who apart from Parker's persistence at centre-forward and the competent defensive display of Wilcox at centre half, had very little to recommend them. All three goals came after the interval. Charlie McClelland met a cross-pass from Regan, half turned, and shot with the right foot to score the first. McClelland then streaked past the powerless Newport backs and drove past the helpless Fearnley for the second. Smith completed the tally near the end with a cross-shot which the goalkeeper ought to have saved.

ROBINS WERE LACKING IN PUNCH

In the opening phases of their Southern League game at on Saturday Cheltenham Town looked as if they were going to give the City Reserves a hard struggle, but they flattered only to deceive and eventually, were beaten 2-0. The game was not very old before it became evident that the Town were a team with out a plan-at least, that was the Impression they gave on this day's display. They lacked cohesion in all departments with the exception of some moves produced on the left wing during that flattering first quarter of an hour. Mills tried hard to get the forward line working, and some of his own goal-scoring efforts were the best seen from the Cheltenham side, but generally the attack did not have sufficient punch to bo really dangerous or to maintain pressure for any length of time.

BRILLIANT NICHOLLS

Apart from Mills, Dean did some good things early in the game, but both these player were included in the general decline which affected almost the whole of the side, with the notable exception of goal keeper Nicholls. He made several grand saves, including one from a high shot by Exeter outside-right, Short late in the game.

The game was marred by incidents in the second half when the referce had occasion to speak to players on either side. Sume became just little temperamental, and this cer tainly contributed to the lowering of the standard of football.

Greenaway, who opened the scoring for Exeter from a penalty in the 21st minute, was a constant worry to the Cheltenham rearguard, but it was a wing half-back, Wilkinson, who netted Exeter's second goal just after the interval when the Town failed to make a good clearance following a goalmouth scramble.

Team
:- Salter; Warren, Greenwood; Harrower, Carter, Wilkinson; Short, Smart, Greenaway, Dunlop, Hutchings.
