Match 17
11th November 1950
Norwich City (h)

Southern League
Lovell's Athletic (a)

NORWICH FORWARDS SLICKEST IN DIVISION 3.

BUT VICTORY WAS SCARCELY DESERVED
Saturday, November 11th 1950.

EXETER CITY 1 (Lynn)
NORWICH CITY 2 (Hollis, Eyre).

Half-time City 0 Norwich 1.

While the result was a disappointment, the crowd of over 12,000 had compensation from seeing as good a game as any played at the Exeter ground this season. The City fought gallantly against the better-equipped foe whose forwards are the slickest in Division 3 but whose main advantage lay in their superior speed.

Exeter City:- Singleton; Clark, Rowe; Fallon, Goddard, Davey; Regan, Mackay, Dare, Lynn, McClelland.
Referee:- Mr P.Martin, of Cobham.
Norwich:- Nethercott; Duffy, Lewis;
Pickwick, Foulkes, Ashman; Gavin, Kinsey, Hollis, Eyre, Docherty.

Attendance 12,305, receipts £914.

Tragedy followed triumph in one dramatic minute at St. James's Park, where Exeter City were beaten by the odd goal of three. Struggling hard in the face of a goal lead which Hollis had given the Canaries in the first half, Exeter stormed the Norwich citadel as the game neared its end. Several corners were forced, and from the last of them Lynn drove the ball hard and true into the Norwich net. The wildly excited City supporters were still cheering when the visitors kicked off again. A down the middle attack would have carried no great threat had Goddard not dwelt on the ball in possession. He attempted a short pass to a colleague instead of clearing his lines. The ball went to Eyre, whose perfect shot from 20 yards into the City net would have beaten any goalkeeper. It spelt the defeat of Exeter, and gave Norwich a victory they scarcely deserved.
