NORTHAMPTON TOWN v EXETER CITY
A great Exeter City sequence came to an end at Northampton, where the visiting team crashed to a four-one defeat, the first the club has suffered in an away game this season.
Northampton: Ansell, Smalley, Barron; Candlin, Duckhouse, Davie; English, Dixon, McCulloch, Murphy, Mitchell.
Exeter City: Singleton; Clark, Rowe;
Harrower, Goddard, Davey; McClelland, Smith, Dare, Mackay, Regan.
The turning point of the match came in the 43rd minute when Davey attempted to pass back to Singleton. The slow moving ball, which was intended for the goalkeeper, was intercepted by McCulloch, who whipped a low shot into the corner of the net, and that was almost the finish of Exeter. Resourceful and compact before the interval, the defence crumbled afterwards. English increased the Cobblers' lead in the 53rd min ute. Mitchell missed a penalty in the 67th, but the scoring was continued in the 71st and 80th minutes by Dixon and English, who had a highly-developed sense of opportunism in this game. Exeter's only score was an angled shot by Regan four minutes from the finish. Result:-
Northampton Town 4 Exeter City 1.

CITY RESERVES LOSE AWAY TO TORQUAY
Torquay Utd. Res. 2. Exeter City Res. 1
THE atrocious conditions ruled Torquay United Reserves' first round Southern League Cup game with Exeter City Reserves at Plainmoor yesterday, when Torquay knocked their local rivals out of the cup competition by the odd goal in three.
It was a grim tussle on a quagmire of a pitch Much of the game was played in drenching rain, and by the end the players were mud- caked and soaked, but both sides still showed plenty of spirit.
At the start, Torquay had slightly more of the attack, but Exeter were not idle, and both goalkeepers were tested. Torquas went ahead in the 33rd minute, when Taggart fouled in the penalty area. was The right-half took the shot himself and made no mistake.
The second half saw Exeter doing plenty of attacking, but they could not pen Torquay in, and both goals were under fire. Fifteen minutes from the end a shot by Davies was knocked down by a full-back to Northcott's feet, and the young winger scored. Within two minutes Fallon, playing at inside right, had reduced the arrears, scoring from a corner. In the closing stages the visitors piled on pressure, but could not save the game.
Torquay: Brinsford; Head, K. Lewis; Taggart, Winters, Pembery; D. Lewis, Davies, Reid, Hearn, Northcott.
City: Salter; Warren, Greenwood; Fallon, Carter, Wilkinson; Short, Smyth, Greenaway, Dunlop, Hutchings.
Result:-
Torquay 2 Exeter City 1 (Fallon),
Attendance 1,750.
