GLASTONBURY v EXETER CITY

Victory was Exeter City's but the glory was Glastonbury's in the F.A.Cup first round tie which the Grecians won by the odd goal of three this afternoon. That is the story of the tense struggle on the Abbey Park ground, which lies beneath the famous old abbey ruins.

Glastonbury:- Taylor; Parkes, Parsons; Norrish, Collins, Spiring; Miles, Allaway, Thomas, Rew, Owen.
Exeter City:- Singleton; Clark, Rowe; Harrower, Doyle, Davey; McClelland, Mackay, Smith, Lynn, Regan.

The City gained their expected passage into the next round, but their Western League opponents, with Roy Rew, formerly of Exeter, at inside-left, gave the lie to the supposed difference in class, and came sensationally near to forcing a replay in an exciting and thrill-packed final stage. Smith scored for Exeter after 20 minutes, and Mackay got another midway through the second half. A two goal deficit, however, did not deter Glastonbury. Chasing every ball, and advancing in mass formation down the slope, the amateurs had Exeter City's defence waging a real back-to-the-wall fight in the last 20 minutes, and Glastonbury's proudest moment came when Thomas bore in to scramble the ball past Singleton with 15 minutes still to go. Exeter held out, but Glastonbury almost made them fight again. The City were matched for stamina and speed and were if anything less skilful in attack, but were more compact in defence, and this is what turned the scales in their favour.
Glastonbury 1 Exeter 2.
