IPSWICH TOWN v EXETER CITY.
SATURDAY,
JANUARY 20TH 1951.
Three days after the Gillingham crash Exeter City's defence came through with reasonable steadiness at Ipswich, and could not be faulted unduly for the 1-0 reverse. The match was lost by Exeter in the 22nd minute, when Clark lost a midfield duel with an opponent. McCrory was able to get clear, and he passed to Warne, who scored from a few yards out.

Exeter City failed to administer a double dose
Gloucester City gained a point on Saturday at Exeter in a game which produced an even mixture of both good and bad football. As the result suggests most of the honours were shared by the rival defences. But Gloucester's forward line, especially in the second half, gave occasional glimpses of combined approach work which was pleasing to watch even if it was a little too elaborated and failed to gain any advantage against a quick-tackling water tight defence. The bad side of the game crept in during the second half, though there had been occasional glimpses of it earlier.
If referee G. F. J. Sawyer, of Weston super - Mare, had adopted sterner measures with these earlier offenders he would have nipped it in the bud. But as the game progressed incidents became more numerоus and it was remarkable that there were still 22 players on the fleld when the final whistle blew. Bottled-up Bouquets were earned by Gloucester City's defensive quartet, King, Lawson, Peacock, centre-half Tredgett.
Tredgett Had Centre Forward Dare, Bottled Up And In Addition To Their General Competence Both Full-Backs Saved Certain Goals. In the first half Lawson blocked a shot from Greenaway when King had come out of goal, and in a later stage Peacock kicked a Smyth header off the goal line. Gloucester's attack took a long time to get under way. Indeed, half an hour passed before they were able to break into the home side's goal area. Subsequent raids failed to produce a goal because they were inclined to hold on to the ball, and Robertson chief offender. The best forward on view was Exeter's , Scottish inside right, Smyth. It was fortunate for Gloucester that this player's colleagues in attack were kept bottled up. Gloucester defence presented an unshakeable front to Exeter, and frustrated the Devon club's attempt to repeat their Long- levens victory the week before
Team:- Salter; Johnstone, Rowe; Wilkinson, Goddard, Powell; Short, Smyth, Dare, Greenwood, Greenaway.
