Fighting determinedly against a side which showed classier style in keeping with their higher status, Exeter City's changed team did very well to hold Chelsea to a goalless first half in the Cup replay on a frost-bound pitch at Stamford Bridge this afternoon. Although there was no great rush to the turnstiles a large crowd streamed steadily in, and there were about 40,000 present at the time of the kick-off. A battery of camera men photographed the teams when they came out. The City led the way with Ray Goddard as captain once more.

One change from last Saturday was made in the Chelsea team, the left half position being taken by Dickson, formerly of Notts, and the "makeweight" in the big transfer deal which took Lawton from Stamford Bridge to Meadow Lane in 1947.

Exeter City:- Singleton; Warren, and Rowe; Fallon, Goddard, and Davey; McClelland, Harrower, Dare, Lynn, and Regan.

The goals which put Exeter out of the Cup were obtained by Smith, Chelsea's 17 years old centre forward, in the 62nd and 68th min utes. The first goal was the subject of a strong protest by the Exeter team, for Smith, clear of every defender apart from the goalkeeper, had merely to tap the ball into the net after a fast drive from Armstrong had been turned on to a post by Singleton. The City defenders claimed "offside," but Mr Carter allowed the goal to stand after consultation with one of his linesmen. Six minutes later there were no doubts about Chelsea's second goal which was shot home after Campbell's lob had rebounded from the face of the crossbar.
