EXETER CITY v GILLINGHAM.
When Exeter City met Gillingham on the latter's ground ten days before the cup-tie with Chelsea they were defeated 9 goals to 4. Exeter gained an early lead in today's game at St James's Park, but it was against the general run of the play, and Gillingham went on to score a goal in each half to confirm their superiority and to register the "double" against Exeter this season.
Against the run of play, Mackay gave Exeter the lead with a close range shot in 20th minute. Gillingham were much cleverer side, and fast and accurate attacks often threatened to bring equalising goal but luck was with home defenders. Gillingham's persistence was rewarded in 44th minute when Campbell shot past Singleton from Burenshaw's centre.
Half-time: Exeter 1, Gillingham 1.
Gillingham continued to dominate play and Thomas scored winning goal.
