at St James's Park.

Exeter City v Southend United

Match Report

TWICE TAKEN PENALTY WINS GAME.

On the first half display Southend were the best side seen at St James Park this season. Exeters defence had to work overtime against a rhythmic visiting attack in exchanges that ran almost non stop in favour of Southend. Yet the only goal scored was by City. A twice taken penalty kick gave Exeter the lead in the 44th minute. The state of the score was a traversty of justice at that stage of the game.

The Righthack-Loughran handled the ball, Smith stepped up to take the penalty and shot over the bar. The Referee ordered a retake as the Goalkeeper had moved before the kick was taken, Smith scored with a shot into the roof of the net, enough to give City victory over Southend for the first time at St James Park since 1936.

Southend launched 10 attacks to Citys one in the first half and if the marksamnship had been as good as their approach work they would have won comfortably. After the interval the City had a greater share of the exchanges and they could have scored again. Lynn twice and Smith both went close.

Whilst the honours of a nard fought match went to Singleton who made several saves in the first half, the City defence as a whole must be commended as a whole. Doyle was a stalwart pivot, Fullback Jonnstone and Rowe did their work well and Harrower was the sides best constructive player.
