UNITED WIN DESERVED

Exeter Disappointed In Derby
by Juno
(Torbay Express and South Devon Echo)

TORQUAY UNITED'S 2-0 defeat of Exetel City at Plainmoor on Saturday was a fitting end to their home League games for the season. The match was watched by a crowd of 9,503, including a number of Exeter City supporters, who saw the United riding on top nearly the whole way through. Exeter City's display was disappointing. It had been anticipated
that this end-of-the-season clash between the two Devon rivals would have seen stronger opposition provided by the Grecians, but the City were unable to strike the match-winning form which brought them such handsome dividends earlier on in the campaign. They could find no real answer to the United's hard-hitting constructive attack. Neither could they effectively break down a strong, determined defence. In the first half the United completely outshone the City. Backed up by their wing halves-and how well Brown distributed the ball- the Magpies swarmed to the attack. In the fifth minute the City goal had a lucky escape. Calland lobbed the ball up and, with Singleton out of reach, a header from Shaw bounced on top of the crossbar. After 15 minutes' play the United went ahead. From a free kick, Brown sent the ball through a crowd of players and this enabled the lively Pembery to run on and fire the ball in from a difficult angle. In the 27th minute. Topping. Shaw, Lewis and Reid paved the way for Evans to score a magnificent goal. Unluckiest City forward was Smith, who made a number of bursts down the left flank, but time and again he was pulled up by the speedy Topping his contribution, Smith headed wide shot over the frame- work, had a ball deflected for a corner and then, late in the game. following a free kick, he whipped the ball across from close quarters but it struck Webber's foot and flashed back into play. While the City were more deter mined after the interval-the standard of play fell away somewhat in this half-the United were still too strong for their Devon neighbours. whose goal had two further close calls. Shaw hit the woodwork on one occasion, and then, when Evans was put through by Brown, he sent in a terrific 25 yards drive which Singleton just managed to tip over the bar. The United, out of danger be fore this game, further consoli dated their position by winning two well-deserved points.
