AND PUT NEW LIFE INTO THE CITY TEAM.
Smiles followed shocks at St James's Park on Wednesday evening, when
Exeter City, the despair of their supporters, were playing like beaten team against Gillingham.
Almost bereft of attacking thrust they were losing by 2 goals to one, and there were only 20 minutes left for play. In desperation the City indulged in a series of positional switches. The effect was to galvanise an hither to listless and incohesive attack into an eager line of speedy opportunists, who quickly piled on three goals to win by four to two.
EXETER CITY 4 GILLINGHAM 2.
Wednesday, August 22nd at St James's Park.
Attendance 7,758, receipts £564. Os. 9d.
City: Singleton; Warren, Clark; Davey, Goddard, Coley; McClelland, Smart, Smith, Mackay, Regan.
Gillingham: - Rigg; Marks, Lewin; Boswell, Niblett, Ayres; Hillman, Lewis, Thomas, Russell, Briggs.
Referee:- Mr R.C.Carter of Swindon. Linesmen:- Messrs F.J.Toms and W.J.Marden.
The star of the final rally was Dick Smart, who scored twice, and in doing so revealed all his old flair for snapping up chances. McClelland obtained Exeter's first goal, in the 31st minute, with a well-placed penalty-kick after Regan had been unfairly brought down inside the area. At half-time the City led by this goal, but facing the sun in the second half the home defence was often hard-pressed to hold the lively Hoppers' attack, and the equalising goal, scored by Dave Thomas with a perfectly judged shot, was fully merited. Several corner kicks were forced by the visitors, and from one of them Thomas, standing in the goalmouth, headed Gillingham's second goal. From the right wing Smith put the City level with a low shot from a narrow angle, then followed the two goals by Smart referred to above.
