The rich promise of Exeter City's first half display against Swindon

VICTORIOUS SWINDON WERE ONLY A MODERATE TEAM.

The rich promise of Exeter City's first half display against Swindon
Town was followed by a sorry fade-out at St James's Park on Saturday evening (kick off 6.30). After leading at the interval the City were beaten by two goals to one and the main causes of failure were a mixture of old and new.

Forward weaknesses of a kind long familiar to Exeter supporters were again in evidence. Less usual were the goalkeeping errors which were apparent later the contest.

EXETER CITY 1 SWINDON TOWN 2.

Saturday, August 25th, at St James's Park. Attendance 9,000, receipts £659. 13s. 6d.

City: Singleton; Warren, Clark; Davey, Goddard, Coley; McClelland, Smart, Smith, Mackay, Regan.

Swindon: Burton; Hindmarsh, May; Kaye, Hudson, Gray; Lunn, Onslow, Owen, Betteridge, Bain.

The defeat was the more disappointing because vital points were given up to opposition which, deficient in defensive resource, for all-round. ability, did not compare with most Swindon teams of the past. It is poor consolation to reflect that this was a match which should have been won, and indeed, would have been but for weak and erratic finishing.

Smart scored Exeter's goal after 21 minutes. Swindon's pair, netted by
Onslow and Bain after the interval, were both attributable to errors on the part of Singleton.

MERTHYR TYDFIL 6 EXETER CITY RESERVES O.

The reserve talent at the disposal of Exeter City has its limitations. if the form shown at Merthyr on Saturday afternoon was a true index. Exeter were overwhelmed and finally beaten by six clear goals, and the Merthyr team squandered enough openings in the first half an hour to have won by a cricket score. Exeter were too ready to drop back in defence, thus giving the Martyrs all the scope they could wish for. Graham Lear did most creditably considering the scant cover received by him, while Doyle played a real captain's part by making valiant if vain efforts to infuse attacking ideas into his men.

City team:-
Lear; Reid, Rowe; Fallon, Carter, Doyle; McGrath, Harrower, Mitchell, Hutchings, Howells.
