Exeter City Unlucky.

BOTH POINTS DROPPED AGAINST GILLINGHAM.

There was nothing outstanding about Gillingham's first victory of the season at the expense of Exeter City on Wednesday evening, for though they had most of the game they were lucky to collect both points.

GILLINGHAM 2 EXETER CITY 1.

Wednesday, August 29th, at Priestfield Road.

Attendance 12,378.

In a fast, rugged first half, in which neither side was anything like together as a team, a goalless return showed the submission to defences which cleared the ball first time, without fuss, and without regard to the niceties of the game. Goalscoring opportunities were, for the most part, few, and defences were well on top.

Gillingham:- Rigg; Marks, Lewin; Boswell, Niblett, Ayres; Hillman, Lewis, Thomas, Russell, Briggs.

City: Lear; Warren, Clark; Fallon, Goddard, Davey; McClelland, Harrower, Smart, Mackay, Regan.

Referee:- Mr R.C.Carter of Swindon.

Play improved in the second half with both attacks striking harder and faster. Gillingham enjoyed one brilliant spell during which Russell, two minutes after the interval, opened the scoring. Five minutes later Exeter equalised when Fallon drove the ball past Rigg from a centre by Smart.

The winning goal was scored by Thomas after Lewis had cleverly cut out the opening. Exeter City were no worse than Gillingham and can consider themselves unlucky to lose both points.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 1 HEREFORD UNITED 2.

Hereford, with a much-changed team, won the Southern League Cup-tie at St James's Park by two goals (Thompson, Sutherland) to one (Howells). Samuel Booth, late of Derry City, made his debut for the City in this match. His play, at inside-left, was neat and thoughtful, but he did not show any signs of being a potential goal-getter.
