Match 05
1st September 1951
Leyton Orient (a)
Southern League
Dartford (h)
Leyton Orient 3-0 ECFC
Attendance: 18000
CITY TOO DAINTY AGAINST LEYTON.
BAD FINISHING IS STILL A MAJOR FAULT.
The Leyton Orient team, who beat Exeter City by three clear goals in London today, could become a powerful force and a promotion candidate if a first-class centre-forward could be found. Exeter City showed improved midfield play and neater constructiveness than previously this season, but unfortunately the forward line is too dainty, and the old fault of inaccurate and weak shooting remains a major fault.
LEYTON ORIENT 3 EXETER CITY O.
Saturday, September 1st, at Brisbane Road, Leyton.
Attendance 18,000.
Orient: Welton; Evans, Banner; Blizzard, Aldous, Brown; Jackson, Rees, Bryant, Blair, Blatchford.
City: Lear; Warren, Clark; Davey, Goddard, Harrower; Digby, Fallon, Smart, Mackay, McClelland.
The best player on the field was Rees, formerly of Cardiff City. His positional play was perfect, as was his distribution of the ball. He was an industrious, skilful, and sharp-shooting inside-forward. The Exeter team had no-one in this class, and even Charlie McClelland, the most dangerous member of the Grecians' attack, fell way belowsome Rees's standard.
Goalscorers: Blair 22 minutes; Rees 70 minutes, and 89 minutes with a penalty kick given against Goddard for handling.
EXETER CITY RESERVES 3 DARTFORD 1.
The hero of this Southern League match at St James's Park was Kirk, the Dartford goalkeeper.
The City team, for whom Howells, Booth, and Hancock scored, ought to
have doubled their tally. Often their forwards swarmed round Dartford's goal like relatives at a rich uncle's will-reading, but no-one had a really crackerjack shot.
Team:- Salter; Reid, Rowe; Doyle, Carter, Hutchings; McGrath, Brown, Hancock, Booth, Howells.
