Norwich City 1-1 ECFC
Scorers: Mackay
Attendance: 15000
MACKAY IN BRILLIANT FORM:
SCORES EXETER'S GOAL.
NORWICH SUBDUED BY LIVELY GRECIANS AT THE NEST.
Exeter City surprised Norwich, who beat them at St James's Park last week, with a sound display at Carrow Road on Wednesday evening, and
fully deserved their point in a drawn game, 1-1. They were easily the better team in the first half, and when the Canaries pressed hard after the interval the Exeter defence looked completely confident.
NORWICH CITY 1 EXETER CITY 1.
Wednesday, September 12th,
at Carrow Road.
Attendance 15,000.
Norwich:
Nethercott; Duffy, Lewis; Pickwick, Foulkes, Ashman; Gavin, McCrohan, Hollis, Kinsey, Docherty.
Exeter:
Lear; Warren, Clark; Davey, Goddard, Coley; Brown, Smart, Smith, Mackay, McClelland.
Referee: Mr P.Martin of Cobham.
Exeter held the lead for nearly three quarters of an hour, and Angus Mackay's spectacular scoring shot will be remembered for a long time. in East Anglia.
Exeter had attacked down the centre, but when the ball came to Mackay outside the penalty area there seemed little positive danger to the home side. Mackay, however, who was in brilliant form throughout the whole ninety minutes, took deliberate aim and beat Nethercott to the wide from fully 25 yards with a terrific left-footer.
Even the notoriously partisan Norwich crowd cheered Mackay's splendid effort.
Mackay's goal heartened Exeter and they almost scored a second time when Mackay centred the ball to give an excellent opportunity to Dick
Smart, who missed from five yards' range. Norwich attacked desperately before half-time only for Gavin to fail badly with Lear advancing to narrow the angle.
Later Norwich improved, and Exeter, mistakenly perhaps, used offside tactics to stop them. Twenty minutes after the interval Kinsey scored following a corner.
