LAST MINUTE GOAL DID NOT COUNT.
EXETER A TEAM OF CONTRASTS AT SHREWSBURY.
Losing by two goals to one against Shrewsbury at the Gay Meadow, the City were a team of contrasts. Before the interval they were slow and ponderous, and played like a side doomed to a heavy defeat by the virile opposition.
The second half was in reverse, for the hitherto lethargic Grecians stormed the Shrewsbury goal in a wave of assaults, and so assertive were they in this period that a draw would have been a fairer result. In fact, a division seemed inevitable when, with two minutes remaining Mackay veered out towards the right wing position and landed the ball in the goalmouth. Egglestone and Potter both tried unsuccessfully to clear, when Archie Smith moved in and shot a goal.
The referee pointed to the centre, and then, noticing that a linesman stood with his flag raised, he consulted the minor official. The brief discussion ended when Exeter were awarded a corner kick, they gained reward from which It transpired afterwards that Shrewsbury had put the ball out of play before Mackay centred.

BENEFIT MATCH FOR TWO CITY STALWARTS.
DOUGLAS REGAN AND BERNARD SINGLETON.
"Barney" Singleton made a triumphant come-back to Exeter City's first team on Wednesday evening, and was one of the stars of a match which was set apart for the joint benefit of himself and Regan. Singleton, who was dropped following mistakes which led to goals being scored against him in the match with Swindon on August 25th, redeemed himself completely on Wednesday, and the onlookers saw the Singleton of old, a capable, alert, and confident last line of defence.
Regan, the other beneficiary, is still on the injured list, and could not therefore take part.
EXETER CITY 2 SWANSEA TOWN 1.
Wednesday, September 19th, at St James's Park.
Attendance 3,383, receipts £307.6s.0d
City:- Singleton; Warren, Clark; Davey, Goddard, Coley; McGrath, Smart, Mitchell, McClelland, Howells.
Swansea: Elliott; Elwell, Beech; Howarth, Rees, Williams; O'Driscoll, Jones, Godderidge, Thomas, Bellis.
Exeter won by two goals to one, and although some of the glitter was taken off the victory because Swansea were without Ivor Allchurch and three other regulars, the home side's display contained several very heartening features.
The defence was in grand form. Warren, the best full-back on view, had a close rival in Clark, while Goddard was another big obstacle to the Swansea attack, which sometimes moved on rhythmic lines. Smart scored both Exeter's goals and nearly did the hat-trick, but a third success was disallowed as he inadverdently handled the bouncing. ball, which came to him from Howells.
Although Swansea were two goals down midway through the second half the interest did not flag, and the lead was reduced by Bellis near the close from Thomas's centre. Exeter City Reserves played a drawn game with Guildford on the latter's enclosure. Nothing was scored.
