INJURY TO MCCLELLAND A SEVERE HANDICAP.
TALE OF WOE CONTINUES:
NEW BLOODED NEEDED.
Bold experiments and an infusion of new blood may save Exeter City. The club's desperate League position (20th) will not be righted by the purposeless and slow combination which was whipped by four goals to none at St James's Park this afternoon.
For the City's conquerors were no Third Division giants. The Aldershot eleven looked a good side because the opposition was so poor. The winners were allowed the maximum time to operate and build their moves. While Exeter waited for the ball to bounce their visitors moved in and secured possession.
EXETER CITY O ALDERSHOT 4.
Saturday, September 22nd,
at St James's Park.
Attendance 6,000.
City: Lear; Warren, Clark; Davey, Goddard, Coley; McClelland, Smart, Smith, Mackay, Howells.
Aldershot: Nicol; Rogers, Jefferson; Gormley, White, Macauley; Bonnar, Taggart, Raine, Durkin, Flint.
Referee:- Mr W.J.Edwards of Yeovil.
An injury McClelland five minutes after th start proved a severe handicap and a contributory cause to the latest defeat of the City. McClelland suffered a damaged hip in a tackle with Jefferson, had to leave the field for a spell, and returned only as a limping passenger for the rest of the game.
In the second half Goddard moved up to the forward line to try and infuse some life into the attack, but it made no difference. Exeter, especially the front rank, were poor in all aspects of the game, and so this season's tale of woe continues.
Aldershot's goals in the first half were registered in the 16th and 27th minutes by Macauley and Raine respectively. Two more goals after the interval by Bonnar and Flint won the easiest victory they are likely to get this season.
Exeter City Reserves were without a fixture today.
