Biographical Text

George Duke was a Luton Town player when he was due to appear as a wartime guest for Exeter City during 1945.

Starting with Sussex club Southwick, George was signed by Luton in 1939 where he stayed either side of the war making 16 league appearances.

As football resumed with a series of 'emergency' competitions in 1945/46, George was named as a 'guest player' for Exeter City's Division Three South (South of the Thames) game against Bristol Rovers on 29 September 1945. Reports of the game indicate that he was replaced in goal beforehand by Walter Staveley who made no further appearances for the club.

Remaining with Luton until May 1949 he signed for Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic, for whom he made a further 10 league appearances, ahead of playing in non-league football for Guildford City, Snowdown Colliery Welfare and Ramsgate Athletic.

George died on 18 March 1988 in Worthing, Sussex.
