Wet weather adversely affected the "gate" at the friendly match this afternoon at St James's Park between Exeter City and the Army F.A., the attendance being about 1000.

The military had hoped to field their strongest eleven of the season on this occasion, but were greatly handicapped by Army Cup engagements and injuries, whilst the disturbances in Ireland were the cause of five players selected being detained there. In these circumstances the Army had to employ a practically new team.

Exeter City fielded their full 3rd Division side, except for Coleburne, whose place was given to Pollard. The young back from Lancashire has acquitted himself with distinction in the Reserve Team, and fully justified a trial with the "firsts" in a match of this discription.

The Army in their red shirts, dark blue knickers and red socks, were a smart looking team, and their play in the opening minutes was very dashing. Exeter were, however, the first to get close enough to threaten danger, and Dixon (goalkeeper) was prominent, making excellent clearances from Hinton and Shields.
After 10 minutes' play a mistake by Green in midfield led to a sharp raid by the military, and Leach (centre-forward) closed in on the goal from the extreme right. Pym came out and dived, but the ball eluded him, and Leach shot, Green saving with his hands. The penalty was taken by Leach, and he scored with a shot which rebounded into the net from the under-side of the crossbar.

City on Level Terms.
Exeter were frequently dangerous in subsequent play. Dixon did well to save a curling shot from Shields, and Makin missed with a daisy-cutter, the margin being very narrow.
10 minutes later  Makin levelled the scores with a fine shot, the ball travelling into the net at express speed. There were further exciting passages in front of the Army goal towards half time, but Dixon was hard to beat.
A mis-kick by Pollard led to Jacques (inside-left) getting a priceless opening, but he too mis-kicked and the chance was lost. Two minutes before the interval Shields gave Exeter the lead with a long low shot into the corner of the net.

Second half
Exeter City pressed almost continuously in the second half, and Shields scored in the first minute after Dockray had cut out the work on the left wing.
After another 10 minutes Shields went through on his own, and netted with a powerful shot from 20 yards range.
The Army citadel underwent further narrow escapes, and Dockray was fouled in the penalty area, but Shields, with the penalty kick, sent the ball just wide of the posts. Shields, however, completed the "hat-trick" with another hefty shot from 30 yards out.
Exeter were without Green during this half, he having retired with an injured thigh. Hinton took the left half back position.
Two minutes from the end Pym brought off a marvellous save from Leach.

Full time Exeter City 5-1 Army F.A.
