Match 41
16th April 1921
Benefit Match
Bristol Rovers (a)
Bristol Rovers 0-0 Exeter City.
At Stapleton Road, Eastville.
Attendance 7000.
Benefit Match for Two Bristol Players
The benefit match on the Bristol Rovers ground on Wednesday evening for Ellis Crompton (pictured) and H.Stansfield (goalkeeper) (pictured) was seen by a crowd of 7000.
Exeter City provide the opposition, and gold medals were offered to the winning side. As the game turned out, the players went unrewarded, for the match ended in a draw.
The City opened in briliant style, and surprised the Bristol crowd with some very clever manoeuvring. In the early of the first half the Grecians pressed continuously, but after 20 minutes they faded out, and the Rovers were the better side during the remainder of the game.
Players Injured.
Exeter were weakened during part of the second half through the abscence of Crawshaw, who was off the field injured for just over 20 minutes. Later Hetherington was rempoarily knocked out.
From that time to the finish the Rovers did practically all the attacking, and it was only the expert goalkeeping of Pym that kept them from scoring. Pym was the City's outstanding player, some of his saves in the second half being of International standard.
Pollard also made a very good impression, but Feebery, his more experienced partner, was frequently beaten by the speed of Walker, the Bristol outside-right. Ellis Crompton, against his old club, put in several good shots without ever looking likely to score with Pym guarding the goal.
Full Time
Bristol Rovers 0-0 Exeter City.
Financial Guarantees.
The medals are being held in abeyance. Crompton and Stansfield were guaranteed a minimum of £300 each, and the Bristol directors will certainly have to make up some of this amount. The benefit match will realise about £400.
