Keen Contest Ends in a Goaless Draw.
The visit of Exeter City to Axminster last evening, Wednesday April 20th, to engage in a "friendly" match against Axminster Town, attracted 1500 spectators, and an even and well contested game ended in a goal-less draw.
The teams were:-
Axminster.
Broom. Thatcher. Phippen (capt). Moulding. Honley. Gage. Leslie. Mitchell (J). Mitchell (W). Read. Dolbeer.
Exeter City.
Pym (capt). Lowton. Parker. Lakin. Arscott. Hilton. Please. Newberry. Miller. Brown. Kelland.
The feature of the home team's work was the strength of their half-back line and the smartness of their left-wing.
Their right-wing was more in the picture towards the finish, and enthusiasm ran high amongst the crowd, but the City full-backs defended well, and Pym was always master of the situation when the ball reached the penalty area.
Full Time. Axminster 0-0 Exeter City.
Newton Abbot and District 0-4 Exeter City.
Attendance.
An Exhibition Match At Newton.
On Wednesday April 20th, Newton receive its first ever invasion from a professional soccer team, the Exeter City side appearing on the Recreation Ground (the home of Newton Rugby XV) against a Newton Abbot and District eleven, in aid of the Newton Athletic Club's prize fund.
Pym's Abscence A Disappointment.
Despite the fact that Newton is such a strong Rugby centre, the game attracted a large crowd of interested spectators, but it was doubtful whether it created any great impression.
The City fielded a representative side, all the players apart from the goalkeeper having appeared in the Third Division, but it was a bitter dissappointment to many that Pym was absent. On the other hand, the locals put in a creditable team in the field, but were fortunate in not having the services of Crad Evans, of Torquay and formerly of the City and Plymouth Argyle at centre-forward.
Teams
Newton Abbot and District.
Southcombe ( G.W.R Rangers), Elliott (Newton Abbot), Gribble ( G.W.R Rangers), M. Ford (Torquay Town), Counter ( Torquay Town), Hall (Babbacombe), Frayn ( Babbacombe ), Townsend ( Babbacombe), H.Ford (Torquay Town), Copplestone (NewronTown), Hunt (Bovey Tracey).
Exeter City.
Charles, Pollard, Betteridge, Rigby, Carrick, Crawshaw, McIntyre, Brayshaw, Vowles, Hinton, Dockray.
The result of the game was, naturally, a foregone conclusion, the only doubt being the margin by which City would win.
Their final tally was 4-0, obtained without undue exertion, although with a little more steadiness in front of goal the local side would have reduced the score against them by two.
Vowles opened the score with a neat header after six minutes, and the City led by this goal at half time.
Half time Newton 0-1 Exeter City
In the second half Pollard notched a point for the Grecians from the half way line. Southcombe allowing the ball to bounce over his head into the net. Vowles contributed number three with a fast low shot, and repeated the performance just before the final whistle.
Exmouth v Exeter City X1.
Yet a third local match was played on Wednesday evening, Exeter City sending an amateur eleven to Exmouth, on the ground of the local Rugby club, at Cranford.
A large crowd attended.
Full Time: Exmouth 0-2 Exeter City X1.

Referee: Mr R.W. David, of Beer.
Exeter City
Pym. Pollard. Feebery. Rigby. Carrick. Green. Brayshaw. Makin. Vowles. Shields. Kelland.
Play of course ruled in favour of the visitors, but the Seaton defence played dogged and determined football, and the halves were tireless workers.
The forwards gave a very spirited display whenever opportunity offered, the result being that whilst Exeter held the whip hand the opposition was strong enough to extend them.
Vowles opened the scoring after 15 minutes, and Brayshaw put Exeter further ahead. Miller scored for Seaton from close in, and Green added two goals for the City.
Half time:- Seaton 1-4 Exeter City.
Midway through the second half Rogers took advantage of a mistake by Carrick, going through on his own to steer the ball wide of Pym and into the net.
An exciting struggle in front of the Seaton goal resulted in Makin striking the upright, the ball rebounding to Green, who was breasting it through when a Seaton player handled. A penalty kick was given, from which Green scored.
Carrick, who changed places with Green, scored Exeter's sixth and seventh goal.
