EXETER CITY WIN AND VACATE THE BOTTOM PLACE.

BUS STRIKE HITS "GATE" AT THE PARK.

When Exeter City met Ipswich Town at St James's Park this afternoon. the attendance was one of the smallest there since the war for a 3rd Division match.

The main contributory factors were Exeter City's disappointing lack of form this season, and the one-day Devon General Bus strike which kept
many hundred supporters from attending.

By their defeat of Ipswich the City have left the bottom rung of the Third Division ladder. They are now above Torquay United and Crystal Palace.

at St James's Park.

Attendance 7,749,
receipts £563. 16. 9.

In the most exciting game seen at St James's Park this season the City had to fight hard for victory. The more polished football came from Ipswich, but Exeter City countered this by determined methods and just about deserved to win.

City: Lear; Warren, Clark; Fallon, Goddard, Davey; Regan, Smart, Smith, Mackay, McClelland.

Ipswich: Burns; Tyler, Green; Baird, Rees, Parker; Myles, Driver, Garneys, McCrory, Roberts.

Referee:- Mr E.W.Baker of Epsom. Linesmen:- Messrs F.J.Toms and G.W.Stevenson.

Goddard was the strong man of the home defence, while in the forward line McClelland had a brilliant first half. The teams were on level pegging at half-time, Regan having scored for

Exeter and Garneys for Ipswich. Twenty-one minutes after the interval McClelland's corner kick, a model of accuracy, was forced into the net at close range by Smart.

The Southern League match between Exeter City Reserves and Bedford, at St James's Park, will be played next Wednesday.

City Reserves Not Extended

COMPLETE MASTERY OF BEDFORD TOWN.

The Southern League game between Exeter City Reserves and Bedford Town, at St James's Park today, opened at a brisk pace and each side forced a corner within two minutes of the start.

Ronnie Rooke, the former Arsenal and Fulham centre-forward, led the Town
attack, and a late change was made by the visitors when Boulton played in goal instead of Gage.
Cyril Johnstone played in the Exeter defence in place of Stan Charlton, who was unable to obtain Army leave, while Hutchings returned at inside left, where he took over from Booth, who had been given permission to go to Scotland to get married.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 4 BEDFORD TOWN 1.

Wednesday, October 10th,
at St James's Park.

Attendance 1, 247, receipts £46. 5s. Od.

Bedford were the first to attack, but Exeter City Reserves fought back strongly, and Mitchell created a chance from which Hutchings tried a first-time shot. The ball hit a colleague, however, and went behind. The next incident of note came when Boulton failed to gather a long shot but he recovered and kicked to touch. A centre from Digby was only a few inches too high for Howells to reach, and then Bedford took up the running. Woodward shot wide, and when Simner made another attempt his ground shot was saved by Singleton without difficulty.

Mitchell headed the only goal of the first half from Digby's corner kick. Coley drove wide with a penalty kick early in the second half, and soon after this Bedford were on terms. When Singleton advanced to gather the ball he was adjudged to have carried it more than the four paces which are permitted by the rules, and an indirect free-kick was awarded the visitors from which Rooke scored.

City Reserves:- Singleton; Johnstone, Rowe; Coley, Carter, Doyle; Digby, Hancock, Mitchell, Hutchings, Howells.

Bedford Town:- Boulton; Delaney, Allen; Trailor, Millbank, Hall; Holland, Woodward, Rooke, Simner, McInnes.

Referee:- Mr G.E.Hoskin of Bristol.

Bedford's controversial goal in the first half made no difference to the result. The City Reserves outplayed the opposition everywhere after the interval and fully deserved their overwhelming triumph. Howells ran on to a long pass from Johnstone and neatly flicked the ball into the net over Gage's head. Hutchings shot the third and fourth Exeter goals.
