CITY ON TOP IN THRILLING FIRST HALF.

VALE SWITCH THEIR FORCES IN VAIN
.

Ray Goddard, the City captain, was after all declared fit to play at St James's Park today against Port Vale. He injured a toe during the match at Bristol last week, and an X-ray examination revealed a bad bruise.

Nevertheless, Exeter were forced to make a late change, Rowe coming in at left-back for Clark, who has influenza.

EXETER CITY 2 PORT VALE 0.

Saturday, October 20th,
at St James's Park.
Attendance 7,500, receipts £568. 6.-.

The first half was a thrilling contest and the City overwhelmed Port Vale in this period. Sustained and skilfully executed attacks by the home forwards deserved a bigger tally than two goals at the interval. Unfortunately this was not kept up afterwards, but the City deserved their success. The defence did its work effectively.

The play of Goddard and Fallon in the middle line was outstanding, and Fred Davey was not far below the standard of these two. In the forward line Mackay and McClelland had a sparkling first half, although Regan was below his usual form.

City: Lear; Warren, Rowe; Fallon, Goddard, Davey; Regan, Smart, Smith, Mackay, McClelland.

Vale: Heppell; Turner, Hayward; Powell, Hamlett, Sproson; Askey, Barber, Cheadle, Mullard, Bennett.

The goals were obtained by Smart from McClelland's corner kick in the fifth minute and by Mackay with a header off Goddard's accurately placed free-kick from midfield, shortly before half-time.

KETTERING TOWN 1 EXETER CITY RESERVES 0.

The City Reserves lost their Southern League match at Kettering by one goal to nil after being on the defensive for most of the time. McInnes and Gallagher both missed easy chances for the Poppies, while Singleton saved with difficulty from Joyner. After the interval neither side looked likely to score until McInnes got the deciding goal for Kettering with about five minutes left.
