EXETER CITY CRACK UP BADLY AND LOSE THE LEAD.
COBBLERS SCORED TWICE IN A SIX MINUTE SPELL.
Bob Mitchell, signed from Third Lanark during the summer, made his 3rd Division debut for Exeter City at Northampton today. He led the City attack in place of Smith, who was suffering from a recurrence of the foot trouble which affected him immediately before last season's Cup tie replay with Chelsea. Northampton included Feehan in goal and Payne at inside-right.
Saturday, October 27th,
at the County Ground.
Attendance 12,576, receipts £1,056.
Northampton:- Feehan; Collins, Wilson; Candlin, Duckhouse, Hughes; English, Payne, McCulloch, Ramscar, Fowler.
City: Lear; Warren, Rowe; Fallon, Goddard, Davey; Regan, Smart, Mitchell, Mackay, McClelland.
Exeter began promisingly, faded, and were no match for Northampton in the second half. Lear, a wonderfully fine goalkeeper, and his hard worked rearguard colleagues were often overwhelmed by a fast moving
and dangerous attack. Lear, Warren, and Goddard all toiled hard, but the odds were too great.
Whereas Mackay was the only Exeter forward who looked the part, the Northampton vanguard contained five purposeful raiders. Mitchell began well but did not see a lot of the ball after the first twenty minutes or so.
After taking the lead through Smart, Exeter, who have won only once at Northampton since the war, were eventually well beaten by a team of all-round strength. Northampton's goals, scored in the second period, were obtained by Ramscar, English, and Fowler, the last two coming in a devastating six-minute spell of brilliant attacking.
Result 3-1.
